India's DoT to Lift Ban on Equipment Supplied by Chinese ZTE, Huawei
August 20, 2010
India's DoT (Department of Telecommunications) has allowed local telecom operator Reliance Communications to purchase gear from Chinese telecom equipment suppliers ZTE and Huawei, according to an August 13, 2010 report by the Hindu Business Line. It is reported that ZTE has agreed to abide by the new security guidelines released by Indian government and signed an agreement with Reliance to provide source codes and allow third-party audits on its network. It is expected that Huawei is going to sign a similar agreement as well. DoT announced in April this year that local telecom operators were prohibited from importing telecom equipment manufactured by Chinese companies, including ZTE and Huawei, saying that the equipment from certain countries might have spyware or malware that could endanger telecom networks in India.
